Therefore, clonus is used as part of the neurological physical exam to evaluate the status of a patient’s nervous system. He hasn’t grown out of the clonus as she had hoped maybe between 3 and 5 months, but otherwise his development is ahead of schedule and his MRI (of brain and spine) came back “normal”. He was rocking on all fours at 5 1/2 months, crawling by 6, pulling to stand and cruising by 6 1/2 and now at 8 months, he often will pull himself up and then let go and free stand. In hyper-reflexia, stimulation of one muscle may produce movements elsewhere, e.g. antagonists or more distal muscles.

With Preeclampsia it is caused by central nervous system involvement (as is hyperreflexia). Clonus. Clonus is a self-sustained, oscillating stretch reflex induced when the clinician briskly stretches a hyperreflexic muscle and then continues to apply stretching force to that muscle. Each time the muscle relaxes from the previous reflex contraction, the applied stretching force renews the reflex, setting up a rhythmic series of muscle reflex pathway resulted in clonus.
